Waterfall, sunrise crater and blue-fire volcano can be strung into one trip across East Java. Here is how the loops run, what each stop costs and which listing fits.

Essentials in a minute
Tumpak Sewu, Bromo and Ijen belong to one stretch of East Java country, and tour companies have noticed. The falls take their water from the Glidik River, which runs down Semeru, the highest mountain on Java at 3,676 m.5,6 Mount Bromo, at 2,329 m, is an active volcano and a Hindu pilgrimage site inside the Tengger mountains, within the national park that lies east of Malang and southeast of Surabaya.1,7
Ijen is the third corner. Kawah Ijen sits at 2,443 m above sea level, with a turquoise lake in the caldera and a blue fire that can be seen only at night, according to the East Java conservation authority.2 It lies between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso, about 45 km from Banyuwangi and about 65 km from Bondowoso by road.8 Ijen Geopark became part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks in 2023.9 A Bromo Ijen tour from Bali runs the same loop in the other direction.
The loops come in a few shapes. One three-day tour is titled from Yogyakarta or Bali and offers drop-off in Bali, Surabaya or Yogyakarta, with Bromo sunrise and an overnight in Banyuwangi before Ijen. The tours in this comparison that start in Malang Regency or Surabaya put the waterfall first. Where you sleep before and after decides which listing makes sense, so read the start and the finish before the price.

Prices are starting prices, not quotes, and each length and route is the listing's own.
On the three-day shared tour we compare against, the first day is the waterfall. Guests are picked up in Malang Regency or Surabaya, spend 5 hours in the car, then 3 hours at Tumpak Sewu, and later drive 4 more hours to Probolinggo for the first night. That is a big day on the road before a very early next morning, and it is one reason the listing calls itself intensive, with early morning and late-night departures.
Other listings build the first day differently. A small-group tour that ends in Bali lists Tumpak Sewu and the Goa Tetes cave on day one, then Bromo with an overnight stay and sunrise on day two. A Malang to Bali tour lists 3.5 hours at the falls, and its accommodation in Malang before Bromo and before Tumpak Sewu is not included. Look at what is left out, because a night of your own in Malang changes the budget.
At the falls the day looks like the hiking page in this guide: stairs, handrails, wet rock and a river. A two-day tour that pairs the falls with Bromo says about 250 m of descent on concrete stairs and about 8 km explored at the waterfall, and advises shoes with a good grip. Save your energy for that climb out. The following two days ask a lot of the same legs.
Length of the loop
Each bar is the length the listing states; the last one is listed as 3 to 4 days.
Bromo is a before-dawn job. On the shared three-day tour the morning is a 1-hour jeep ride, a sunrise that lasts 2 hours, and a hike of 105 minutes, after which the group drives 6 hours to Bondowoso for the second night. Wikipedia notes that people also walk from the village of Cemoro Lawang to the volcano in about 45 minutes, or join an organised jeep tour with stops at the Penanjakan viewpoint at 2,770 m.10
Bromo has its own entry costs. TNBTS set the foreign-visitor entrance at Rp255,000 per day, the same on workdays and holidays, from 30 October 2024, and the vehicle entrance at Rp5,000 for a two-wheeler and Rp10,000 for a four-wheeler.3,11 Ask the company whether the tour price includes these, and check the current rate, because rules change. The park opens a normal daily quota of 2,752 visitors to Bromo and 3,572 on long weekends.12
Dress for the cold, not for the jungle you left the day before. One listing advises a double-layer jacket for Mount Bromo. The jeep takes 5 to 6 passengers on at least one tour, so be ready to share the seat. Mount Bromo is also closed during local ceremony events whose dates change each year, according to one listing. If your dates are fixed, ask whether a ceremony closure falls on them.

Ijen follows the sleep you can get in Bondowoso. On the shared three-day tour the group drives 2 hours to Ijen and hikes for an hour on the way up after a short briefing. Wikipedia says a two-hour hike is required to reach the rim of the crater, followed by a 45-minute hike down to the bank of the crater lake.4 The two figures differ, so read the listing's itinerary for the day you pick.
The blue fire is ignited sulfuric gas that emerges from cracks at temperatures up to 600 degrees C, with flames up to five metres high.13 It is not a show on a schedule. One three-day listing says blue fire at Ijen is a natural phenomenon and is not guaranteed. Another says the crater is always closed on the first Friday of each month, and two more repeat the closure. Check your calendar before you buy.
The fumes are real too. One listing does not recommend its tour for pregnant women, for children under 5 or for people with respiratory problems because of the sulfur fumes at Ijen. Pack a mask only if the operator lends or advises one, and follow the leader's instructions in the crater. The climb is a night-and-dawn hike, so your fitness and your sleep matter more than your camera.

Three days in order
Morning one

First night
After 4 more hours in the car the first night is in Probolinggo.
Second dawn
A 1-hour jeep ride, a sunrise of 2 hours and a hike of 105 minutes.
Night two
A drive of 6 hours ends in Bondowoso for the second night.
Third dawn
A drive of 2 hours to Ijen, then hiking; blue fire is not guaranteed.
Listings cut the same country into different lengths. A shared tour of 2 days from Surabaya, Malang or Probolinggo does Bromo and Ijen only and skips the falls. A 2-day tour from Surabaya, Malang Regency or Sidoarjo does the falls and Bromo and skips Ijen. A Tumpak Sewu, Bromo and Ijen tour of 3 to 4 days from Yogyakarta, Surabaya or Malang does all three and offers private or small groups.
There are even shorter attempts. One 18-hour day from Malang combines Tumpak Sewu and Bromo, a single stretch of 18 hours that squeezes two big stops into one day. Longer is not automatically better, but it gives each stop more room. Let the sights you want decide, not the lowest figure, and compare the stated lengths of the listings in the table below.
Prices run from $129 for the 2-day falls-and-Bromo tour to $173 for the small-group tour that ends in Bali. The shared three-day loop starts from $172. These are starting prices, and accommodation, meals and the park entrances may or may not be in them, so read the listing's inclusions. A listing that looks cheap often leaves out a night in Malang.

Tick before you book
The finish matters as much as the start. The small-group tour ends via the Ketapang harbour with a ferry of 1 hour towards Bali, and it needs a minimum of 4 people to depart. The Malang to Bali tour is built the same way and ends in Bali after a ferry of 1 hour. The 2-day Bromo and Ijen tour ends at Ketapang ferry port or Surabaya.
If you are not heading for Bali, choose a loop that returns where you started. The 2-day falls-and-Bromo tour drops off in Sidoarjo, Malang Regency or Surabaya. The tour titled from Yogyakarta or Bali offers drop-off in Bali, Surabaya or Yogyakarta, with budget or standard accommodation. Do not book a flight for the last evening until the operator has confirmed the final drop-off time.
A final practical point is group size. The shared three-day loop is a shared, non-private tour and asks for early starts. The small-group tour needs 4 guests to run, while the 2-day Bromo tour is limited to 15 participants. A bigger group is cheaper and livelier; a smaller one is easier to coordinate. Pick the one that matches how you like to travel.
