Essentials in a minute
Tumpak Sewu is a tiered waterfall about 120 m high on the border between the Pronojiwo and Ampelgading districts, fed by the Glidik River that runs down Semeru.2,3,9 Madakaripura is described as 200 meters high, and its path ends in a tube-like valley where the waterfall stands.1 Put that way the difference is already clear: one is a curtain, the other is a chamber.
Tumpak Sewu is an open amphitheater. You can look at it from a rim, from the base or from the stream in between, and the same water reads differently from each. Madakaripura is the opposite: a waterfall at the end of a narrow valley, ringed by steep cliffs that drip water over their whole face as if it were raining.10 The first is about width and perspective, the second about enclosure and noise.
Their settings differ as much as their shapes. Tumpak Sewu lies in Pronojiwo in Lumajang Regency, under Mount Semeru.3,9 Madakaripura is in Probolinggo Regency inside Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, near the village of Sapih in the Lumbang district.4,11 One is a Semeru-side attraction, the other belongs to the Bromo side of the same park.

Each cell is as its source states it, on the source's own date; the two waterfalls are in different regencies and are run by different bodies.
Driving yourself from Malang to Tumpak Sewu means about 2 to 3 hours; from Lumajang town it is about 1 to 2 hours.15 A private Madakaripura and Bromo listing counts 2.5 hours by car from its pickup point (Malang, Batu or Surabaya) to Madakaripura; from Malang the two waterfalls are a similar distance, in opposite directions.
From Surabaya the trip to Madakaripura takes a little over three hours; Indonesia Travel suggests renting a car from Surabaya or Malang, or joining a tour package that also covers Mount Bromo.16 The waterfall is about 30 km from the centre of Probolinggo city, at least an hour's travel.17 Tumpak Sewu, in contrast, is reached from Malang or Lumajang on its own long day.
That difference in geography is the real tie-breaker for some itineraries. Madakaripura pairs naturally with the Bromo sunrise, and one private listing from Surabaya or Malang does exactly that over 15 hours. Tumpak Sewu fits a stand-alone day from Malang of about 10 hours. If your route runs Malang, Tumpak Sewu, Bromo, you will pass the first waterfall; if it runs Surabaya, Bromo, Madakaripura, you will pass the second.
At Tumpak Sewu the upper viewpoint is about 10 minutes from the car park, and the base is reached by a 30 to 45 minute trek on bamboo steps, rock and wet earth.26,5 On one day-trip listing, about 90% of the walk runs through water. That is a descent into a bowl, and the climb out is the price of the view.
Madakaripura's walk is described differently by different sources. Indonesia Travel says visitors trek about 20 minutes, crossing rivers and a rocky path, before reaching the entrance, and detikJatim gives 1.5 km on foot to the main waterfall.6,17 TIMES Indonesia says it takes about 1 hour from the car park and that the walk crosses the river several times.27,28 Read these as three descriptions of the same approach, not one measurement.
Where a listing says more, believe it: a private Bromo and Madakaripura listing says you change to a bike taxi at Madakaripura and continue on foot, and advises shorts and slippers for the waterfall. A local guide can help with the river crossings, according to TIMES Indonesia.27 Neither walk is a stroll, but Madakaripura's asks for wet feet from the first crossing.

Waterfall only

Sunrise first, falls last
Both waterfalls soak you, in different ways. At Madakaripura getting wet is nearly inevitable, and stalls along the trekking path rent umbrellas and sell plastic bags to protect valuables such as cameras.19 In 2022 detikJatim reported a raincoat at Rp5,000 and a phone protector at Rp20,000 to Rp25,000 near the entrance.36
At Tumpak Sewu the wetness comes from the stream route. The day-trip listing recommends a dry bag or poncho, a waterproof phone cover, extra clothes and a towel, and notes that rental water shoes come in a limited range of sizes. Lodgings near the site hire out boots at Rp10,000 to Rp20,000 a pair.37
The packing rule is the same either way: electronics in a dry bag, shoes that tolerate soaking, a change of clothes in the car. What changes is the feet. Tumpak Sewu's stairs and wet stone reward shoes with grip; Madakaripura's river crossings make slippers or sandals with a strap the more practical option, as the private listing's advice for shorts and slippers suggests.

Tumpak Sewu's domestic entrance is Rp20,000 per person, and the foreign figure is disputed across sources; the entrance-fee page on this site sets them out.20 Madakaripura's ticket was reported in 2022 at Rp22,000 for local visitors and Rp45,000 for foreign visitors, bought at the booth at the entrance.21 Check the date on any figure, since both sites have changed their arrangements.
Hours differ by about an hour. Tumpak Sewu is open daily from 07.00 to 15.00 WIB,22 while visiting hours at Madakaripura are usually limited to 14.00 WIB, after which visitors still at the falls are asked to return to the car park.23 Plan the descent at Tumpak Sewu for the morning and the Madakaripura walk before early afternoon.
Weather is the bigger difference. Madakaripura runs an open-and-close system and closes to visitors when it is overcast above the waterfall, with staff using handheld radios because there is no mobile signal.8,38 TIMES Indonesia advises avoiding the rainy season there.39 Tumpak Sewu has its own hazards: a listing for a shared guided tour warns that a landslide or flash flood can close the site at any moment.

Choosing and packing
People search for Goa Tetes and Tumpak Sewu together because they belong together. Goa Tetes is one of three attractions on the integrated ticket that began on 24 December 2024, alongside the Tumpak Sewu waterfall and Panorama Grojokan Sewu, all in Sidomulyo village.7 It is not a rival to Madakaripura and it is not in Probolinggo.
A day-trip listing puts the Goa Tetes cave waterfall 30 minutes past the falls, after a descent of 40 to 60 minutes. That makes it an extension of the Tumpak Sewu visit rather than a separate outing, and a good reason to leave extra time at the bottom.
Madakaripura carries a different kind of story. Tradition holds that the land was given to the Majapahit commander Gajah Mada by King Hayam Wuruk, and many people still visit to meditate or perform rituals there, especially on the eve of 1 Suro, the Javanese New Year.40 If your interest is as much in the setting as in the water, that history is a reason to give Madakaripura its own morning.
