Tumpak Sewu waterfall entrance fee: the numbers on record

Brief reply

The Tumpak Sewu entrance fee is Rp20,000 per person for domestic visitors, while sources disagree on the foreign fee: Rp100,000 in an ANTARA report of 31 August 2026 and Rp120,000 on the provincial portal.

Around the ticket

Why one waterfall has had several ticket prices

Tumpak Sewu has more than one ticket price on record because the valley was long run as separate pieces. In December 2024 a travel operator described paying at the Coban Tumpak Sewu post and then being asked for a second ticket named Grojogan Sewu, 200 meters further on.8 A viral video of a guide protesting a triple charge, Rp150,000 in total per tourist, came before the regency's decision.9 Lumajang answered with a one-gate system that started on 24 December 2024.10

The regency went further in March 2025.11 It closed Grojogan Sewu temporarily from 9 March 2025 while Tumpak Sewu stayed open under its guidance,11 and then merged the two names into one: Wisata Tumpak Sewu.12 Any price you read that treats Grojogan Sewu as a separate ticket describes the earlier arrangement, so check the date of whatever you are reading.

The waterfall is run by the Sidomulyo village tourism awareness group under the guidance of Lumajang's tourism office.13 Fee changes are announced by the regency, which makes its tourism office and the East Java provincial tourism portal the natural places to compare any number against. Blogs and booking pages copy figures that were true on one day and then go stale.

The domestic fee: Rp20,000 and how it got there

ANTARA reported soon after the Grojogan Sewu closure that Lumajang's tourism head said the domestic entrance had been adjusted to Rp20,000 per person.1 That followed an earlier agreement that had set a uniform Rp100,000 for domestic and foreign visitors alike.14 Before the one-gate rule, locals paid Rp10,000 per attraction;10 the new figure is a single ticket that works at either gate.6

The provincial tourism portal lists the same Rp20,000 for domestic visitors.3 In April 2026 GNFI repeated Rp20,000 per person and said one integrated ticket covers the upper panorama and the base area.5 If you pay as a domestic visitor, that is the number to expect at the booth.

Parking is charged on top: Rp5,000 for two-wheelers and Rp10,000 for four-wheelers.7 Boots hired from lodgings nearby cost Rp10,000 to Rp20,000 a pair.7 Keep small notes ready for these: the entrance booth is not the only place that takes money on a visit to the falls.

The foreign ticket: what each source says

No single figure for foreign visitors is safe to quote: the sources on record disagree. A travel operator quoted in December 2024 said the normal ticket was Rp50,000 for foreigners, paid once.2 The one-gate rule that began on 24 December 2024 put it at Rp100,000 for all three attractions.10 After the domestic fee was cut, Lumajang's tourism head said foreign visitors would still be charged according to international tourism standards.16

ANTARA's most recent report on record, from late August, gives Rp100,000 as the foreign ticket and Rp20,000 as the domestic one, after Lumajang and Malang regencies agreed to remove ticket collection at the foot of the waterfall.4 The East Java provincial tourism portal puts the foreign ticket at the panorama entrance at Rp120,000; that page carries no date we could read.3 GNFI's piece from April 2026 says Rp20,000 for local and foreign visitors alike.5

How to read this: the Rp20,000 for everyone is the lowest claim and the odd one out.5 The Rp100,000 figure comes from a news agency, most recently in late August, and the Rp120,000 figure from the provincial tourism portal, which is undated.4,3 If you are a foreign visitor, budget for the higher numbers and treat anything lower as a pleasant surprise, and ask for the receipt so you can see which ticket you were sold. Rounding the budget up costs little, while being short at the booth can cost you the visit.

Two gates, one ticket, and the stalls in between

Lumajang says visitors can use either of two main gates, and a ticket from one gate is accepted at the other without a further charge.6 The first trouble reported in December 2024 was a second ticket asked for 200 meters beyond the first post.8 Since then the regency has said it wants the area free of illegal levies that harm tourists and local people.17

In practice, buy your ticket at the main booth and keep it. If someone further along asks for another one, ask what it is for before you pay: the regency's stated position is one ticket valid at either gate.6 A polite question and a look at your receipt settle most doubts, and a guide or driver who knows the site can tell you quickly whether a request is normal.

Goa Tetes belongs to the same system: the one-gate ticket introduced on 24 December 2024 covered the waterfall, Goa Tetes and Panorama Grojokan Sewu.10 Kapas Biru and Kabut Pelangi are different. They are separate Pronojiwo attractions run by local community groups,18 so treat their fees as a separate question to ask on arrival.

What the shared day trip already covers

If you book the shared day trip from Malang, the ticket question mostly goes away. The listing counts transport, a guide, entrances and lunch in the price and leaves toilet fees out. It starts from $36 and lasts 10 hours, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. A from price is a starting point, so the total you pay depends on the date and group size you choose.

Two other group listings carry the label Skip the ticket line: the 8-hour shared guided tour from Surabaya or Malang, from $40, and the group tour from Malang or Surabaya, from $35. A label like that says nothing about whether the entrance fee is in the price, so check the booking page before you rely on it.

The private trip, from $64, lists a guided hike of 4 hours at the falls and an optional quad bike ride of 2 hours for an extra fee. Whatever you book, ask whether the entrance and parking are in the price before you pay, and keep a little cash for what is not.

At the booth

Pay once and keep the proof

Before the gate3

  • Carry small notes for the ticket, parking and boot hire
  • Buy one ticket at the main booth and keep the receipt
  • Arrive well before the site closes for the day

If a second ticket is asked for3

  • Ask what the ticket is for and which site it names
  • Point out that one ticket is valid at either gate
  • Let your driver or guide handle the conversation

Reading prices online3

  • Check the date on any fee you find in a blog or article
  • Treat a figure that names Grojogan Sewu as a separate ticket as old
  • Prefer the tourism office and the provincial portal to repeated figures

A simple budget sheet for a self-drive visit

For a self-drive visit the pieces are the entrance ticket, parking, optional boot hire and fuel. The entrance for a domestic visitor is Rp20,000,1 parking is Rp5,000 or Rp10,000 depending on the vehicle,7 and boot hire is Rp10,000 to Rp20,000 a pair.7 For a foreign visitor the entrance line is the uncertain one, and the sources above span Rp50,000 to Rp120,000.2,3

Add the drive. From Malang it takes about 2 to 3 hours by private vehicle, from Lumajang town about 1 to 2 hours.19 Gates run from 07.00 to 15.00 WIB,20 so work backward from the closing time and the descent when you choose a start.

Bring cash for all of it. Small notes avoid the awkward moment when the person at the booth cannot change a large one, and a pocket for the receipt keeps the ticket handy if a second request arrives. If you would rather pay once and let someone else carry the notes, the day-trip listings above are the alternative.
